Distinguish 'not at all' and 'not any longer' #1 (permalink) Fri Jun 26, 2009 11:30 am   Distinguish 'not at all' and 'not any longer'

How can I clearly understand two expressions

-'not at all' and 'not any longer'?

e.g.They won't finish it at all. He's not at school any longer.

Can I use 'They won't finish it any longer. and He's not at school at all.'?

'At all' is an emphasizing phrase: 'they won't finish it, indeed' = 'they won't finish it at all'.
'Any longer' (and 'any more') means that a previous situation or event will cease: He is not a student any longer / any more = He used to be student but now he is not.
