Usage 'the media' as plural #1 (permalink) Thu Jul 02, 2009 14:42 pm   Usage 'the media' as plural

I don't understand the sentence 'the media has changed its relationship to...'

I would have written it this way: 'the medias have changed their relationship to...'

Why is my sentence wrong? In particular, I have problems understanding why you say 'has changed' and not 'have changed'

Is there someone who can explain this to me?

Thanks a lot,

Honorfield

"Media" is the plural of medium.

The word "media" in the sentence: 'the media has changed its relationship to...' is treated as singular in the same way words like "team, group, family, etc." are. Or, you can say that "media" here is treated as a "body, agency, etc."
