I like paragliding. It is an extereme sport. But i really enjoy paragliding. There are a lot of good places in Turkey for doing this sport. But the best place in the world is Austria. Anyone who wants to ask any question about paragliding, he/she will get an explanation. I will try to write my best about it. |

| I gotta say one of my favorite sports is tennis. i hate soccer lol I dont like it at all. It's kind of boring for me. I preffer to play tennis, basketball or baseball rather than soccer. that doesn't mean t I watch every tennis match or basketball game on tv. i prefer playing it to watch it. lol |

Alan Someone once told me (Probably an Australian) That when an Australian says he is interested in Sport - They ordinarily mean "Playing" it.
But when a British person says he is interested in sport - they invariably mean "watching it on tv"
I agree with the "Scottish/British" thing - which is a normal part of the "BBC" presentation - Can you remember Mary Peters? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Peters_(athlete)
every time she won she was "British" every time she lost she was "Irish"
But with Lawn tennis there seems to be such a poetic irony about the whole thing.
The cucumber sandwiches brigade and the whole tennis scene (Apart from Wimbledon fortnight) is woven almost exclusively into the upper class's which means there's not enough working class participation thereby limiting potential success. _________________ Any day you wake up on "the right side of the dirt" is a good day. |

Hi Alan!
Thank you for that wonderful essay. I really enjoyed it. However, as usual, I have a question regarding a sentence from the text:
“Thus whenever there is the slightest possibility of that record being created, whenever there is the merest hint that we might win, hysteria breaks out.” – What does “hysteria breaks out” mean from this context?

Hi Dimitry,
Thank you for your appreciation. What I meant by
| Quote: |
| hysteria breaks out |
was that people go mad with excitement at the prospect of the UK winning. You could almost say it's happening again with the Football World Cup. Now I have to confess to being a total football phobe but you can't go anywhere without seeing cars sporting the English flag on their cars and houses (the red cross of St George). In my road there are so many houses smothered with this flag that I doubt whether the occupants can see out of their windows. Maybe they are ensconced in their houses for the whole series watching it on TV. It's reached the stage where I almost feel like saying to someone who wants to come round to our house: Oh, you can't miss us. Our house is the one without the flags.
Best wishes,

Thank you, Now I understand what you mean: we had the same, when Russian football team beat Netherlands under the quarter-final of EURO 2008, it was really amazing. The streets were full of people celebrating the win. I guess such events unite the country and are really useful. I wish Russia participated at the World Cup coming soon.
Regards, Dmitry |
