Hi Clare,
It's a question that has been around for a long, long time. There are two points of view: than is a preposition and should be followed by an object pronoun (than me) or it starts another sentence and is a subordinator and when we say:Charlie is better than he, we are shortening the subordinate sentence/clause from better than he is.. To most people better than he sounds unnatural and it is commonly accepted that better than me is the usual form.
