Hello,

In the following sentence, why is the word "abtransportieren" used in lieu of "transportieren", and is it okay if the latter is used instead?

"Man kann zwar in einigen Regionen viel Solar- oder Windstrom produzieren, aber es fehlen die Kapazitäten, um ihn zu den Industriezentren abzutransportieren."

I´m no teacher of a language at all, but possibly I could shed some light on your issue.

Simply "transportieren" can be correct too. But that only means that the energy is conveyed, regardless from where to where.

Your case is more specific since "abtransprtieren" additionally refers to the point that the energy is produced at the mentioned stations and cannot be stored but must be conveyed to its users. Thus from the generators towards the consumer (Industriezentren)and not counter.

You also can talk about "hintransportieren", which would fit if you had the "Industriezentren" as subject and the generators for object in the sentence.
