The Farmer's Son. Part four. #1 (permalink) Wed Jul 08, 2009 9:56 am   The Farmer's Son. Part four.

My surprise at what I had seen was so great that I almost fell off the motor-cycle.
My Mother's face drained of colour and she moved toward me in an attempt to justify her actions, but I accelerated away toward the farm and my sick Father.

The thoughts of her betraying my hard-working Father filled me with both anger and disgust, but there were more important things that demanded my attention at the moment.

My Father was still were I had left him, and I dismounted and ran to his inert body. His breathing was very shallow and I was relieved when I heard the distant wail of the approaching ambulance's siren. The ambulance screeched to a halt in a cloud of dust and two medics hurried to join me at my Father's side. They made a quick rudimentary examination and said he wasn't too bad, but they would take him straight to the hospital just to be on the safe side.

As they placed him on a stretcher and were carrying him to the ambulance, my Mother drove up, and leapt out of her car. She tried to enquire as to what was happening, but I gave her a hateful look and leapt inside the ambulance and quickly closed the doors.
We drove off, and my last view of my Mother was her standing there in the yard in a swirl of dust looking dismayed and bewildered.

At the hospital my Father was transferred into a bed and a doctor came very quickly to give him a more thorough examination. I sat silently on a chair anxiously awaiting his prognosis. After a few moments the doctor turned to me with a smile on his face.

Apparently my Father had suffered a mild heart attack, but the doctor was sure that with the prescription that he would provide, that my Father was going to be fine, however, he recommended that he should remain in hospital for a couple of days so that they could carry-out further tests.
My relief was immeasurable and I thanked both the doctor and the medics for their work.

All that remained now was to return home and face my Mother. Just what excuse she was going to come up with would never be good enough for me to accept. One thing I was sure of was, that my Father must never find out what had been going on behind his back.

I thumbed a lift back to the farm, but on the way a brainwave hit me, and I asked the driver to drop me on the corner. It wasn't far from Ellie's house and as I walked up the long drive toward the huge house I was composing just what I was going to say.

As I was about to ring the bell, the door was opened wide, and Ellie's Father stood before me.

"I want a word with you, in private," I heard myself saying............................

This is getting better and better, Bill. You surely have the knack of doing it.

Does the story have anything to do with your past experiences, or is it thoroughly fictitious?

Thoroughly fictitious Ski, so much so that I don't even know what he wants to see Ellie's Father about yet ................................ but I will!.

Bill.
