Good morning Jam. I believe the reference is to the condition of the cabins. As they were the very first ones built on the site then they lack all of the improvements that were put into the later ones.

Can we use 'elder' to distinguish the things? I mostly heard this when talking about a person. _________________ First lesson - English, not english. I, not i. ~A student of English |

Hi dear,
In my eyes, "ones" mean: being the only individual of a specified or implied kind, and surely here it refers to those lodgings. "This is possibly one of the elder accommodations here, definitely one of the most basic ones (lodgings)". |

Hi Jan,
Two points - we use 'elder' for references to people and so in this case it would be 'older'. The second point is that 'accommodation' is usually used in the singular form only and in this case you would have to say 'older types of accommodation'. 'Ones' refers back to 'River Huts'.
The whole sentence would be better as:
Some of us stayed in the Tree Tops River Huts. This is possibly one of the older types of accommodation here, definitely one of the most basic ones.
'Ones' in this sentence refers back to 'types' and is used so that you don't need to repeat the word 'types'.

Accordingly I can say the following:
I see many dogs in this garden, and there are ones in that garden too
Am I right?
Thank you. _________________ We are always looking for a miracle but the things we are used to seeing are more miraculous than those we are looking for. |

I guess this construction is incorrect or fails to express the thought behind it.
I would give another example for 'ones' --
I see many dogs in this garden, I like the ones who do not bark at me.

Hi Jamilion,
You have to qualify 'ones' if you are using it instead of repeating the previous noun. As Gray has shown, you could say 'the ones' where 'the' qualifies 'ones'.

The ones -- more than one
...I like the ones who do no bark at me.
The one -- only one
...I like the one with black and white spots. (assuming there is only one dog with black and white spots :)) _________________ First lesson - English, not english. I, not i. ~A student of English |

Hi Jamilion,
Look at these:
As there was a choice of blue or green phones, I chose a blue one (singular).
There were different sizes of banana for sale and i decided to buy the large ones (plural).

Oh hello ones, how are you?
- Oh! You again? What do you want from me?
- what do you mean?
- Why are you chasing me ?
- I just want to understand you
- I'm not important
- Do you think so?
-Yes and you can delete me from your English dictionary..
-I will do that but I'm sure we will meet each other someday
-See you then. _________________ We are always looking for a miracle but the things we are used to seeing are more miraculous than those we are looking for. |
