A have a question about this sentence:
"We would much rather this turn into a "slanging war"!"
isn't there a verb missing? like "we would much rather see this turn..."?

In your sentence -

The verb 'turn' is used in the subjunctive and suggests 'were to turn'. If you introduce 'see', which would make perfect sense, you change the structure.

"We would much rather this turned into a 'slanging war'" wrong?

Or alternatively;

"We would much rather see this turning into a slanging war"

This get better by the minute. English eh!

Hi,
I think that ".............Turned..........." is also correct.
Because we use "would rather+subject+past tense",but the meaning is present or future:
I'd rather cook the dinner now.(=I'd rather you cooked the dinner now.)
