I found a sentence which I think is quite weird.

"My favorite activity at the camp is the swimming."

Is "the" necessary here? I don't understand why the sentence has "the" here.
Can anybody explain this to me?

Thank you.

Hi,
We use article "definite-the" before a noun which has become definite as a result of being mentioned a second time. I don't know what the context was about, but surely enough, "the camp" hasn't been mentioned for the first time.

Hi!!!

I think we have "the swimming" here, because the narrator means a particular way of swimming in a particular place (the camp). You can say I like swimming, which means you like it as a general activity, and it does not matter where you swim or how you swim. The swimming at the camp is specific. The particular swimming is meant in your sentence. He/she enjoys this particular swimming. You can say: "Swimming makes you fit"(general) and "The swimming here is my favourite activity"(particular). There are some other things you can do, but you want to stress that it is the swimming that you like the best of all. So, it is not general, but specific.

"At the camp", there is "THE" as it is a very particular camp where you are at the moment. So, in both cases THEs are necessary.
