Hi guys,

please what does it mean when car "gets great mileage"?

Example: VW's new diesel-powered hybrid gets great mileage - better than Toyota's top-selling hybrid. Its price-tag is another story.

My guess is it means that the car has great lifetime / that the driver is going to be ale to ride this car for a long time.

thank in advance guys.

cheers

It is an idiomatic phrase that refers to the fuel efficiency. If it were more precise, it would be, "This car can go a great distance from burning one liter (British "litre") of gasoline (British "petrol")."

It travels further than similar engine capacity cars per gallon/litre of petrol/fuel.
