It had been a long lonely night when I finally clocked-off from my job as a night-watchman. The job was very boring, and each night I had only the breaking dawn to look forward to. There were many jobs that I could have chosen, but the solitude of a watchman's job suited me.
Since the passing of my wife several years earlier I had never sought the company of women, preferring to live alone.
Walking home I had a sudden thirst for a drink, so I headed for the little twenty-four hour bar on the corner. The place was empty as I took my seat at the end of the bar. I lit a cigarette and sat patiently waiting for the bar-tender to appear.
Big Martha suddenly appeared from the back of the room carrying a small crate of soft drinks. She was a big friendly woman, and she had obviously been very beautiful in her earlier years, but life and time had taken their toll of her life, and now she had obviously resigned herself to being friendly and sociable, rather than trying to fight the years, as lots of women do. She was happy with herself, and she made an ideal person to keep this place ticking over.
"Well, long time no see," she smiled. "Where the hell have you been hiding yourself, it must be three months since you were last in here." "Yeah, I have a new job now. I work nights and sleep most of the day. I get little time to socialise nowadays." "How's your love-life going then?" she laughed. "No time for girl-friends I suppose?" "No, not really, but I had a very strange thing happen to me just before I took this new job." "Well, go on then, tell Martha all about it," she laughingly replied.
"Funnily enough, it happened in here. I think it must have been your night off. Anyway, I was sitting here in this exact place when this beautiful young woman walked in and sat just along the bar from me. "She ordered a drink, but she didn't really seem that interested in starting to drink it. She just sat there staring at the counter and saying nothing. She looked so lonely and lost that I was driven to speak to her."
Big Martha was taking an avid interested in my story and she filled my glass to the brim. "Then what happened?" she enquired. "Well, I can't honestly remember what I said to her, but she obviously didn't mind my talking to her. We sat for a while just chatting until it was time for me to be going home to bed. I asked if I could walk her to wherever she lived, as it was getting late, and I pointed out that she shouldn't be walking alone at this time of night in the city. She just smiled and said that she would rather come with me to wherever I was going. I really couldn't believe that this beautiful young woman would find me attractive, but there it was, she obviously did!"
"We left the bar and slowly walked to my little apartment. I went to turn on the light, but she asked me not to. She started to take off her clothes and I could feel my heart pounding. She climbed into my bed and lay back on the pillows smiling at me in the half-light from the window.
It all seemed like a dream. I just couldn't believe that she was here with me. It was like a dream that I had only ever imagined in my mind. I quickly shed my clothes and joined her in my bed. We made love very tenderly before both falling into a deep sleep."
"When I woke the next morning she was still fast asleep. She looked so vulnerable and child-like. I realised that there was very little food in the larder, so I crept gently out of the bed and quickly dressed. I went to the local supermarket and bought what I thought would be sufficient for our needs, and returned to my apartment." " Entering the apartment as quietly as I could, I set the table for breakfast, then I made coffee and went to the bedroom to awaken her." "My heart sank ...... she had gone." "In the bathroom I found a message from her ; She had written on the mirror in lipstick, It's time that I moved on."
Big Martha was now standing almost in tears, and she wiped her face with her bar-rag.
She looked at me with her tear-filled eyes and softly said, " I wish that I were beautiful, or that you found me attractive, and I wish I weren't so goddam fat, and I wish that you were mine. I so wish that you'd come with me, when I leave for home, for we both know all about loneliness and living all alone."
I looked long and hard at Martha, and I realised that she was right. I finished my drink and placed the empty glass on the bar.
"OK Martha, let's go. Your place or mine?"

Dear Kitos,
I liked it. It's interesting. I read it and realized that I've never seen single persons in their middle ages. In my country family is so important thing that, nobody stays alone. I've never met big and lonely Martha who is waiting for another single XMan from the bar I think that will be wonderful if you continued the story . Why is she alone, what is the reason of beeing lonely? no, I've change my mind. There is the happy end, why do I need the continuation?! If you continued, that XMan would probably break her hearth ...
Thanks,

Interestingly, just one conversation constitute this story. I doubt whether the midnight watchman was telling the truth

Hey guys, as long as you like them, then I'm happy to keep on dreaming them up.
If I was an author with any ability whatsoever, then I'd fatten them up to three or four hundred pages and maybe have them published.

Dear Kitos,
Then keep on dreaming please, I like reading. As I see Gray is also happy to read the stories.
You can publish your stories, all you need just a "sip" of romanticism

Phoebe, that was in answer to your request for something with a little love and tenderness included.

What do you mean? the sweet lies? Saying 'sweet lies' , I don't mean the lies in real life, I hate it, I supposed the sweet love stories, where there is nothing bad and everythins is absolutely incrediable and beautiful .You know, that never happens, but they are positive )) _________________ incomplete.... |

Good morning Kiprida. I'm afraid my own story would prove to be very boring, and not worth the time taken to write it.
My time is past, and I fear it will not improve in the future. Better I just stay in fiction. That way nobody gets hurt, especially me.
