You have answered your own question: the best way to keep your vocabulary is to read it or use it immediately and often. We remember the oft-appearing words like 'window', 'get' and 'mother' while we forget the words we seldom use or see, like 'panegyric', 'kin' and 'zygote'. _________________ Native English teacher at Mister Micawber's |

| Reading and getting a chance to use a new word is the way to make a new word one's own. When reading do not look into a dictionary to know the meaning of a new word. Just continue to read and try to guess the meaning from the context. Then after sometime, say atleast a few hours, if you still remember reading the word and if you are still distrubed by the word go to the dictionary and read the various ways in which one can use that. This way a new word becomes one' own. |

You know, it is easy to say than follow. My TOEFL teacher also suggested me to do the same thing but the problem is, once I immerse myself in the book, I either ignore the whole word if it is not the key word or look up in the dictionary if it is, so that I know its meaning in no time. I just can't suppress the feeling of wanting to find out what happen next, especially if it compelling read. So, in the end, curiosity always win me over. :D |

That's fine, Bulone-- you can alternate. Just try not to get into either habit (of looking it up or skipping it). _________________ Native English teacher at Mister Micawber's |

| Learning is more subconscious. If you can not remember a new word that you had read earlier and if it does not bother you, the word is not worth knowing for all practical purposes as far as you are concerned. best of luck nanucbe |
