Little Billy's first day at school was an exciting adventure to him. Lots of new children, and lots of new things to take his interest. He was overjoyed when the teacher made them all put on little aprons, because, she said, they were going to paint pictures.

Billy loved to paint, and he had spent many happy hours at home painting in his garden.
Flowers were his favourite subject, and he was fascinated by all of the beautiful colours that the flowers contained.

He started off in earnest to get some colour on his paper, and pretty soon there were a myriad of colourful flowers all over his paper.
The teachers attention had been drawn to his frantic activity, and she walked over to his little desk.
She viewed his work with scorn.

"Just what are you supposed to be doing young man?" she asked.
"I'm painting flowers Miss," little Billy replied, his face paint-splashed but beaming.
"Well, for your information young man, flowers are red with green stalks, and we paint them in straight lines, not all over the paper," she scornfully stated.

"But there are so many colours in a flower, and I see every one," he sheepishly replied.
"Young man, I am the teacher here, and you will obey my instructions. Go and stand in the corner, facing the wall. When you are ready to do as I have told you, then you may return to your seat and continue painting, not before."

Little Billy stood in the corner and he felt so miserable. He could hear all of his new friends laughing and having a good time painting. Finally he decided to do just what the teacher had said, and he returned to his little desk.

He took a new paper and began to draw flowers just as the teacher had instructed him to do so; straight rows of red flowers with green stems. He was so sad not to be able to paint the many colours that he knew in his little heart that the flowers had always displayed to him.

He stayed at this school for a further two years before his father found a job in another town, and the whole family had to move there to live.

Their moving to another town meant that Billy had to attend a new school.
His first day went well. He made new friends and felt he would be really happy in this new school.

The second day began well, but later in the day they had to take art lessons.
Billy took his place and the teacher said they should paint a garden scene.
The art teacher at this school was a happy young woman, and she was interested in the well-being of her pupils, especially the new Billy.

After a while she sauntered across to his desk, and she was dismayed to see him painting lines of red flowers with long green stems.
"Billy," she asked. "Don't you see any other colours in a flower other than red?"
Billy looked up at the happy young teacher and replied,

"No Miss, everyone knows that flowers are only ever red with green stalks."

Japanese have just one word for green and blue colours. But that does not mean that they don't distinguish one color from another.
