So, there I was, twenty years of age, without a job, and very few prospects in sight. I filled my time by doing odd-jobs for folk, and sometimes working in the local garage, just checking oil and water, or filling people's tanks and adding air to their tyres.
One fine sunny day I was working away in the garage when in drives this huge Jaguar car onto the forecourt. The window slowly lowers and a big fat guy at the wheel beckons me over. Sat beside him is this beautiful young woman, and I'm thinking it was his daughter. I couldn't have been more wrong, it was his wife!
He tells me that they have just bought the big old house on the outskirts of town, and that there are lots of small jobs that require attention. "Do you want the work boy?," he asked. "Yes I do," I eagerly replied. "OK, well be at the house at 8 a.m. sharp tomorrow. I'll make a list of the jobs I need doing, and son, don't be late, I hate slackers." With that he sped off in a cloud of dust. I had the feeling that I wasn't going to get on well with this guy. Best to just keep my mouth shut and get the work completed as quickly as possible. Anyway, I was so broke that I would have worked for the Devil if he'd asked me.
The next day I was there at 8 a.m. prompt and the fat guy gave me this huge list of jobs to get started on. "Everything you need is in the garage," he said. " I only hope you are capable of doing a good job boy, I hate poor workmanship." I kept my head down and said I'd do my very best work for him.
On the third day of working for him, he suddenly appeared and said he was going to disappear for a couple of days as he had business interests elsewhere, but his wife would still be at home, so I could continue the work. "Don't be slacking whilst I'm away," were his parting words.
Later that day I was working on the stairs repairing one of the treads when his wife came behind me with a tray of cold lemonade. "I thought you might like a cold drink," she said. "That's very kind of you," I replied. "I hadn't noticed you standing there. You're very quiet." "Oh, I've been watching you working now for a couple of hours, and you have such skilful hands. Can I help you in any way," she laughingly replied. Well, I guess you know what happened, and what continued to happen for the next couple of days! I finished my work at the house, and with the list all ticked off, I returned to the garage to do some other jobs.
Two days later the huge Jaguar pulls onto the forecourt and the fat guy waves me over. "I see you got through the list," he started. "The work was pretty shoddy, but then again, I don't expect to find real craftsmen around this dump," he growled. "How many hours did you work?" "About forty all told,"I said.
He handed me five twenty pound notes, as though he was God. One hundred pounds. "But that's only two-fifty an hour," I gasped. " That's all I pay for odd-job men," and he chuckled as he sped away.
I was furious. I cursed and I stamped for all I was worth. Eventually though I calmed down, and I gave a little smile as I thought ;
Well, there's some justice in this life, for what that man had done to me,
I'd done to his wife!
