I might use this question, for example, if I want to know the travel plans of an Italian friend who is currently on vacation in the US. I might use that sentence, in essence, to find out the date of his return flight to Italy.

This could be used in a similar sort of situation. However, it would probably be more commonly used to ask someone about travel that is part of a regular schedule of some kind. Perhaps the person has to travel to Italy frequently for business reasons, and I want to know when the person's next trip to Italy is scheduled.
