Maria,

You say you are hard of hearing, it means you hear , but at the same time you can use sign language. People always do stupid things with us, it doesn't really matter if we are hard oh hearing or not. We only need to discover the strongest sight of ourselves and improve ourselves. Then everything will be ok. Let the others to look at us, even to gaze, so what? It's our life....

~Phoebe

Hard of hearing people are sometimes treated as children or mentally retarded people. :-(

Maybe your interlocutor does not know about your hearing problems. When you ask him to repeat again he thinks that you are stupid and do not understand although you just don't hear him. Try not concealing your problems but frankly telling it to people.

I don't try to hide my hearing loss. I stopped doing that when I started at the school of Alvik, a school for hard of hearing people in Sweden. I think many people here seams to hide their hearing loss or am I the only hard of hearing person here that's surprise me.

Well I know there are many sites where they just discuss hearing loss and how to live with a hearing loss. But when Torsten sends me audiolinks I must tell him that I can't hear it as they are talking to fast. English is like Greek to me if anybody is talking to fast. Sometimes it's the same with Swedish.

If I email Torsten he just says it's better to use the forum. Thats why I have written about my hearing loss under a few topics.

Well, Maria, then just ask your interlocutor to speak more slowly. I think that would be enough.

Sometimes it's not enough. If I am in a noisy place I say to people to write to me. If I attend a party which happen once in the blue moon I try to fix a sign language interpretor. It's very difficult to get a sign language interpreter at parties as it is a shortage of sing language interpreters.
