Is there...? Yes, there is. (or Yes, there are two...?) #1 (permalink) Wed Jul 22, 2009 11:14 am   Is there...? Yes, there is. (or Yes, there are two...?)

Hello, every one.

I'm just wondering about how to answer this question.

Well, I mean, right now, there are two students in the classroom.
Then, someone asked, "Is there a/any student in the classroom?"
Which answer is correct?
-A: "Yes, there is. In fact, there are two in the classroom."
-B: "Yes, there 'ARE' two students in the classroom."
-C: Both are OK.

On the other hand, if there is only one student in the classroom,
then someone asked, "Are there students in the classroom?"
Which answer is correct?
-A: "No, there is 'ONLY' one student in the classroom."
-B: "Yes, there 'IS' one."
-C: Both are OK.

Hmm, I'm confused when one of my students asked me the question.

Thanks very much. Wink

"is" would be used for singular subjects, and "are" for plural.
