TOEFL essay: Changing one thing about your hometown #1 (permalink) Sun Jul 26, 2009 0:27 am   TOEFL essay: Changing one thing about your hometown

If you could change one important thing about your hometown, what would you change?Use reasons and specific examples to support your answer

My hometown has always been my pride. I was born and brought up in the capital city of India. My hometown is a big metropolis and provides all the amenities that any big city in a developed nation does.

I love my hometown for the mere fact that I spend my yester years there. Growing up was real fun. I attended the best school and college in the city. I had a fairly good social circle and lot to do on weekends. Amidst the entertainment and good times, there have been instances where I wished that I could change my homwtown a bit.

I would like to elaborate the above statement by giving few exmaples here. My hometown majorly has north Indian population. People beleive in conspicous consumption and feel happy in showing off thier materialistic possesions. This gap between the higher and the middle and lower income groups of the society always would put me off. People in my hometown are fairly rich who would rather beleive in acquiring than sharing with others. Moreover, my hometwon is an urbanized city of India with ever increasing rates of population. There are more number of poeple to be fed than the number of people who earn thier livelyhood. Due to higher population rates and lesser jobs, people of lower income strata sometimes are prone to begging on the streets. This definitely is not a good sight to watch. In my view, people who are capable of earning livelyhood should not simply beg on the streets.

Furthemore, pollution has been a red signal for my hometown. There have been state regulations that have been imposed over the years. These laws however have not produced desired results. Out of the above problems, I would like to concenterate my thoughts on pollution. I would try to reshape strategies and laws that have been formulated to control pollution so far. One of my mechanisms would be car pool system to ensure there are lesser vehicles on the road. This would certainly be of some help in controlling the harmful gasses and fuel emission. I would reach out to the local city representatives and discuss possible measures at t/ regional level to control this problem. In addition, I would talk to voluntary orgnizations that work towards envoirnment protection to protest against current laws that have not been strong and effective in controlling the pollution.

To conclude, I shall do the best i can by creating teams and making the general public aware of their rights. I believe that this shall be a step ahead in changing my hometown , as also being a responsible citizen.
