Ok, I was watching an episode of How I Met Your Mother and I came across this dialogue. This guy tells about how he talked his way out of a ticket. He talks about how he invited a police officer to a barbecu party to ward off getting a ticket. And when he is done with talking, his friend says:

''I would have done that too if I had have been going to a barbecue.''

So ok, my question is, what difference would it make if he said:

''I would do that too if I were going to a barbecue.''

No difference. Both have the same meaning.
