American phrase "I know it's a little out of left field" #1 (permalink) Sat Aug 01, 2009 12:13 pm   American phrase "I know it's a little out of left field"

Hi guys,

can you please help me with this American phrase? What does it mean exactly when someone say "I know it's a little out of left field, but I wanna do it"...eg. I heard this phrase in the episode of Desperate Housewives, where Tom Scavo, middle aged guy, decided to be a student again...He said to his surprised wife: I know it's a little out of left field, but walking across the school quad, I felt so alive....

thank you guys in advance

"Out of left field" means that something came from a place where you didn't expect it and don't usually look. The expression comes from baseball.

No, a baseball that flies at you from a place where you haven't noticed, usually the left side of the outfield.
