Differences between past perfect tense and past continuous perfect tense? #1 (permalink) Sun Aug 02, 2009 5:15 am   Differences between past perfect tense and past continuous perfect tense?

Dear techers,

could you explain the differences between usages of past perfect tense and past continuous perfect tense? in my learning progress, i find it very difficult to use them in some cases.

this is a sentence we've finished : ' Homestead High School's footballl team had never won a championship until last season.' is it correct? I think we can use the past continuous perfect in this sentence because it's mean emphasizes on the continuity of action 'never won'. Do you think so? if not, pleased to give me a explanation.

i look forward to hearing from you.
sincere,
Ginny

Both of those forms are less commonly used now, but you have the right idea. Notice further, however, that past perfect continuous, like the past continuous, is used to create a background action within which another action occured.

'We had been dancing for an hour when my wife arrived'.

This other action is all but mandatory, either stated or implied, if the continuous form is to be used.
