Why is this sentence correct and why dont we use an article here before trainer?

I am applying for the position of trainer.

Hi Anupumh,

The article is not needed here because 'trainer' describes 'position', which already has the definite article 'the'. You might like to look at some material I've written on the articles. http://www.english-test.net/lessons/16/index.html

Alan

Why can we put the article (a)
because (trainer ) is a singular???

I studied that
If the noun is singular we must put 9a) e.g. (a boy)
If the noun is plural we must put (the) e.g. ( the girls)

Hey Alan, I have another query now.

I am applying for the position of a doctor
I am applying for the position of doctor.

Which one is correct?

Hi,

That's exactly the same as 'position of trainer' - no article is needed here with 'doctor'.
