I was renting a place a year ago. My roommate used to cook meat in our kitchen, but now I have bought a house, and we do not cook meat there. I told this to my friend in the following manner: "When I was renting, we used to cook meat in the kitchen, but after buying a house, we don't cook meat there."

I was renting a place a year ago (YOU CAN LIVE IN A PLACE, BUT YOU CANNOT CONTINUOUSLY RENTING A PLACE. YOU MAY SAY "I RENTED A PLACE A YEAR AGO". My roommate used to cook meat in our kitchen. Since I bought a house, we no longer cook meat in the chicken. I told this to my friend: "When I LIVED IN A RENTING HOUSE, we used to cook meat in the kitchen, after buying a house, we don't cook meat there."

It is not clear by reading your last sentence: do you no longer cook meat in the old kitchen or the kitchen in your new house?

First let me say that it would be a great help to this forum if it was mandatory for members to list one's native language in one's profile.

Personally, if I was seeking help with expressing myself in another language, I would want to know if the person helping me grew up speaking that language.

Now, Icykhool, I have a question. Are you saying that the place you used to rent is the same place you now own? Because if you are, then you would explain it like this:

When I was renting this house, my roomate cooked meat in the kitchen, but now I own the house so I make the rules and I no longer allow meat to be cooked in the kitchen.

If the house you purchased is a different house than the one you rented, then explain it like this:

I used to rent a place with a roomate and he cooked meat in the kitchen. Now that I have bought my own home, I don't allow meat in the kitchen.

@Sandsoppa: It seems to me that English is not your native language. If it is, you should know that "when I lived in a renting house" is not something an English speaker would say. Also "YOU CANNOT CONTINOUSLY RENTING A PLACE" What the heck is that? I think you mean "one can't continuously rent a place", which is false. One can rent as long as one can pay or until the landlord throws one out!

BTW, English is my native language.

When I was renting, my room-mate used to cook meat in the kitchen, but now that I own this house I don't allow the cooking of meat in the kitchen .

Kitos. Native English speaker, not that it matters. :) :)

Expatcat. People have to learn from their slight errors. I know many non-Brits on this Forum who can leave me standing in English grammar, and probably your good self too, so please....... keep it friendly.

You are right, I am not native for sure. That is why i am here. However, you did not impress me with your native language. I bet that my capability to use native language is so much better than you can with yours.

What I mean in that sentence is that: the renting is an action and you need to do only once, which was completed a year ago. You can live in the house, but you no longer need to go to the landlord to "renting" all the time. The tense is wrong. I hope you can learn something, more or less from a non-native speaker of your language.

@Kitos: Of course one needs to learn from one's errors. That was the point of the post, I believe. Icykhool was unsure of how to properly express his/her idea, gave it a go, and posted here looking to learn from the possible errors. I live in a country where I am not yet fluent in the language and often make use of similar boards in German.

I always keep it friendly. Did you infer some unfriendliness from my post?

@Sandposa: If English is not your native language, then perhaps when you reply to a post asking for grammatical clarification, you first state that you do not know the correct answers, but would like to see if what you THINK is correct can be confirmed by others with a better grasp of the language.

I am not here to impress you with my skills. I am here to share my knowledge of English language. Betting on things you do not know about is not wise.

In any case, let us discuss the word "renting". In Icykhool's original sentence, "I was renting a place a year ago", his/her use of the word "renting" is absolutely correct. The tense is also correct. Renting is the process of paying (usually monthly) in return for property, or in this case a house. It is an ongoing process. Also correct would be, "Last year I rented a place."

The one-time process (usually yearly in the case of apartments) of entering into the agreement with the landlord is referred to most commonly as "signing a lease".

I moved to Germany. I found an apartment I liked. I signed a lease. I am currently renting the apartment.

As mentioned, I came here to learn how to improve my language. While I saw the post, I cannot help stopping to give advices. I say what I know. Your more friendly other than arrogant advices in the last post is acceptable.
