Mickey was a good friend of mine.

He was a good-looking boy,not as good-looking as me of course, nevertheless a good-looking boy.

The love of his life was Nancy, a dark-hair svelte-bodied young woman, and they were both hopelessly in love with each other.

Their dream was to be married, and have a nice modern home, and someday a family of their very own.

Mickey was spending what little money he could save on driving lessons. He wanted to become a delivery driver for his uncle who owned a factory producing heavy industrial machines. He'd promised a job to Mickey if he could pass the necessary test to get this coveted licence.

Mickey studied hard and spent his precious savings on lessons and finally he was judged to be ready for his test.
He passed with flying colours. The examiner could find no fault with his driving, and Mickey arrived home all exited with his new licence.

Nancy was thrilled. Now they could really start saving to get married, because this job would pay very good money and they would be able to save for their dream home.

He reported for work at his Uncle's factory, and as promised, a job was waiting for him.
He proudly put on his new company overall, and smiled when he was shown the wagon that he would now be driving.
It was almost new and sported the company's logo on the side in huge letters.

The loaders had finished their task of loading the heavy machines onto the back of the lorry, and Mickey was handed the delivery schedule for his days work by his Uncle.

"Take care Mickey, these machines are worth an awful lot of money," said his Uncle.
"Never fear, I'll be very sure to drive safely," replied Mickey.

He started the huge engine, and smiled at the hiss of the air-brakes.
With a cheery wave he slowly pulled out of the factory compound and headed down the highway.

Entering the city he took great care to drive slowly and to take the corners without mounting the pavements.
He appreciated the fact that the loaders had done a good job of securing the various items, and he was happy to know that nothing was loose to move about in the back.
He made a couple of deliveries and had his first break.

He'd pulled into a lay-by on the highway and was enjoying his lunch, thinking about how good life was going to be now that he had a well-paying job.

After finishing his lunch he headed out once more with his deliveries.
It was slowly becoming dark and he was about to do his last delivery.
This was the largest piece on the wagon, and had been loaded first to keep the weight well forward on the truck.

He was approaching the cities oldest area which was at the bottom of a steep incline.
As the wagon gained speed his foot nursed the brake to slow him down, but the pedal floored easy without a sound.
He stamped furiously on the brake but nothing happened.
He looked wildly around for a means of escape, but there were none.

Before him the factory was spewing out it's workforce, and dozens of people were streaming across the road before him.
Woman walking and talking. Men on bicycles just pedalling slowly up the hill.
He had only seconds to make a decision.

He thought about Nancy and their dreams.
He thought about their dream home. He thought about his parents and his brother.
And then he looked again at the people before him, now standing horrified as the huge wagon sped straight at them.

Mickey swung the wheel with all of his might and left the road, crashed through the factory railings and went plummeting down the embankment.
The wagon careered on until it finally hit the factory wall, at which time the huge machine on the back of the wagon, free of its securing straps, rocketed forward and crushed Mickey's cab like a tin can.

Mickey had no chance. He died instantly from his injuries.
Mickey's Uncle was contacted by the police and he had to break the news to Nancy and Mickey's family.

Now I knew Mickey very well, and I do know that his actions were governed by his love of people, and his love of life.
He made his decision, and he gave his life without a moments regret.
He sacrificed his life so that others might live.

Mickey was the best friend of mine during university years and his dream was to leave our country and to live in UK. Fortunately, his dreams became true and I know he's happy now.

I'm sad for Nancy, and for their dreams..........

That reminded me as last month I lost brakes too. Damned technicians  at UKRAUTO service had replaced the front left ball bearing and installed the brake support in such way that the braking hose was rubbing against suspension parts. Finally after 6000 km it frayed through and "the pedal floored easy without a sound". Luckily it was not at high speed and I managed to avoid accident.

Icy, that won't be too easy. It's a sensitive subject at the best of times.

Please give me a while to think about it.

OK Icy, it's done. Not very good I'm afraid, but not an easy theme either.
