Signing invoices in Germany? #1 (permalink) Fri Aug 07, 2009 14:30 pm   Signing invoices in Germany?

Hello everyone,

What kind of information do invoices have to contain your country and are you required to sign invoices you create? I'm asking because my tax adviser told me I should make sure that any invoices I receive contain a signature -- either an electronic one (a special piece of encrypted software code) or a real one.

Many thanks,
Torsten

Signing invoices in Germany? #2 (permalink) Fri Aug 07, 2009 14:36 pm   Signing invoices in Germany?

Hello Torsten,

The typical prerequisites: item, price (with or without VAT), date, consignee, issuer, number. I'm probably forgetting something.

But, as far as I know, the signature is obligatory here. I haven't seen a single invoice without a signature.

Regards,

In the US, a typical invoice contains the name, address, social security number or tax ID number of the issuer, the name and address of the receiver, the goods or services rendered, the date of the order, a price breakdown and the total amount due. I sometimes add other information that I think is relevant, and sometimes I'm forced to add even more information when I'm billing someone in Europe.

In the US, invoices do not have to be signed, and I don't see how it would be possible for a large company to sign all the invoices it issues. They have more important things to do with their money than to pay a person to sign invoices all day.

German laws on invoicing (and those in some other European countries) are ridiculously strict and require information that I can't possibly see the importance of.
