The dog went for the postman and bit his leg. ( I sow this sentence in a book) Why here "FOR" (went for) ? Why no" To"?

it is absolutely right english man and woman loves pets specially dogs and cats....... they treat them like a member of their family.....means they grow up in lavishness......
i have been in US so i can tell u the truth and the fact of the matter is i love pets too........
