American phrase "you have to play the hand you're dealt" #1 (permalink) Fri Aug 14, 2009 23:32 pm   American phrase "you have to play the hand you're dealt"

Hi guys,

may I have a question about this American phrase? I heard this phrase in the amazingly funny episode of Desperate Housewives, where old lady Karen McCluskey and her same-aged friend Roberta, were hesitating about whether they should go to inform the police about who killed they neighbor. Karen: I'd feel better if we had proof. (she thought that they story about it wouldn't convince the detectives)
Roberta: I'd feel better if I had a functioning liver Smile , but sometimes you have to play the hand you're dealt.

Please may I take that final part as..."but sometimes you have to take the things as they are"? What's the right meaning of it here?

thank you guys in advance for your effort.

PM

"but sometimes you have to take the things as they are", (and learn to deal with them.)

You are correct PM.
