Dear Torsten,
Many thanks for your emails!
I'm Osvaldo. I'm of average height, neither fat nor thin. I'm from Montevideo, Uruguay, so I'm Uruguayan and my native tongue is Spanish.
Uruguay is surrounded by two big countries: Argentina and Brazil. Uruguay is small in size, but it is huge at heart. The Rio de la Plata River flows along its southern border.
Montevideo is the capital of Uruguay. It's a nice city with magnificent beaches, whose sands are as soft as talc. People walk along the seashore at the weekends, and many tourists visit this place each year. On the other hand, with regard to sports, I think it's worth to mention that people are very fond of football game. Diego Forlán –a famous Uruguayan football player- played for Manchester United, before playing for Atlético Madrid now. By the way, Torsten, what team do you support?
I'm interested in British and American culture, you know: history, literature, how people think, etc. I like movies (films), even the old ones, and also I like reading books. I worked –inter alia- in computer science and also as a math teacher, so I'm interested in science and new technologies too.
As for the Listening lessons by Sue Darville, I have to say "Thank you", and I hope to improve my listening skills as soon as possible. Otherwise I think is pertinent to say that I was looking for some information about Bristol. Wow! It's a nice, old city with a lot of history!
I read the post sent by Laura, and I think it's moving and a lesson of life. Best wishes for her.
Thanks again, and Best regards.
P.S. I'd like to share this poem with all of you: "What is he?" by D.H. Lawrence, which I sometime read in a book. D. H. Lawrence (1885-1930), was a British poet and novelist. In this poem he says that we do not see people as they really are. A man's occupation doesn't matter. The important thing is the man himself.
What is he? - A man, of course. Yes, but what does he do? - He lives, and he is a man. Oh quite! But he must work. He must have a job of some sort. - Why? Because obviously he's not one of the leisured classes. - I don't know. He has lots of leisure. And he makes quite beautiful chairs. There you are then! He's a cabinet maker. - No, no! Anyhow a carpenter and joiner. - Not at all. But you said so. - What did I say? That he made chairs, and was a joiner and carpenter. - I said he made chairs, but I did not say he was a carpenter. All right then, he's just an amateur. - Perhaps! Would you say a thrush is a professional flautist, or just an amateur? I'd say it is just a bird. - And I say, he's just a man. All right! You always did quibble. |
