I was reading a book where i came across with a sentence that is...

''The Liberalists are the staunch supporters of equality and liberty, and they are opposed to the idea of special rights being given to any individual''.
why the word ''being given'' has been used here and which grammatical usage does it indicate?

please help.
I would really appreciate your input.

We do not permit 'chatroom lingo' here. 'Being given' is a progressive aspect, passive voice, non-finite verb heading a non-finite clause.

Ah, I see. OK, then, just ignore it-- I think you may have picked it up by accident in copying and pasting. Chatroom lingo is the coded language of internet chat rooms, words like 'u' for 'you' and 'BTW' for 'by the way'.

'Being given' is a passive voice non-finite verb, the head of its clause.
