TOEFL essay: Job satisfaction #1 (permalink) Tue Sep 01, 2009 11:59 am   TOEFL essay: Job satisfaction

Some people prefer to take a position in a company and work for the company. Other people think it is better to go into business for themselves. Which do you think is better? Give reason and examples to support your response.

Taking a job is a momentous decision for each and every person. In my opinion, one who is supposed to take a job should accept it with regard to his/her capabilities and interests. It is undoubtedly clear that “job satisfaction” is a highly significant factor in order to be successful in business.

From my point of view, one of the top priorities that should be contemplated before getting a job is “job security”. Many people want to feel independent and that is why they want to be their own boss. For me, however, it is more significant to feel secure. Moreover, I believe that one who works in a company could gain some essential experiences in order to start his/her own business and he/she can work freelance after a while.

Since being self-employed has its own difficulties and it might result in failure, I rather work in a company as an employee rather than owning a business. Meanwhile, as far as I am aware, one who is expected to have his/her own business must have enough money and relevant work experience to start it, otherwise; it inevitably leads to business failure. For instance, an inexperienced friend of mine tried to have an electronics firm but he could not and he is unemployed now.

On the other hand, if I work for a company, I will not have to take risks or make difficult decisions alone. I will have someone to tell me what to do, someone to evaluate my work, gives me directions and deadlines for it, and most important of all, someone to give me paycheck on a regular basis. My employer tells me if I need to do something over again. I do not have to worry if a client will like my work, a product is acceptable enough to sell or if we have sold enough merchandise. Those are my employer’s concerns. In other words, the great responsibilities are over my employer’s shoulder and my mind is at rest. Thus, I can just focus on getting the job done right.
