Hello everyone,

I would just like to introduce you to a new group we have started working with, it's a group of 10 mid-twenties ladies all working in either retail or beauty, such as fashion stores and hairdressers. Due to their ages all did have a few years of English at school so all are able to communicate quite well. I work with this group every Sunday for 2 hours and each week we change the location between their places of work so we can really do some real life role play situations. As in this week we are going to be in one of the salons and we will concentrate on salon language which is obviously useful for the stylists but also the rest as they may need to visit an English speaking salon at some point. I mentioned that I concentrate on relevant business English with the group but each week I also review 1 grammar rule and give them homework to help instill it. They are a very lively bunch and a lot of fun to work with.

Regards
Scott

Sunday 6th September

This was the first day with this group, and it's grown from 10 to 12 and possibly more people want to join so I think I will be splitting it into 2 based on levels.

We had a good first day with most having a fairly good understanding of English from their time at school. Firstly I carried out a needs analysis with each member of the group to help me realise their experiences and levels of English. For the rest of the session we looked at Introductions and basic useful phrases. Due to my trip to Neubrandenburg I won't be seeing the group next week but I look forward to our next lesson as they are really fun and motivated group of people.

Hi Scott,

Thank you very much for sharing this with us and congratulations on your achievements. You have been doing an outstanding job and I'm impressed by how much energy and effort you have been putting into your Sunday group.

If you like, we can offer you some help with the administrative work and also provide your group with additional materials such as our PDF and MP3 products. Let me know what you think and have a great Thursday in Neubrandenburg.

Regards,
Torsten

Hi Torsten,

Thanks again for your offer of assistance, and I'm sure you have some very valuable resources and experience to aid me and my students in reaching our targets. I hope we can meet soon so we can discuss both our future plans and create some kind of plan and strategy on our we can best implement them.

Again as I said yesterday, if you ever need any extra help with 'english-team' issues please feel free to ask.

Enjoy Nordhausen and please give them my best wishes.

Regards
Scott

I spent the day refreshing the group on all the important grammar tenses including-

-present (simple, continuous, and perfect)
-past (simple, continuous, and perfect)
-future (simple, continuous, and perfect)

We also had a brief look at prepositions.

The group have a fairly good grasp of the English language, but I felt due to the time since they last studied it was important to review these points before we moved forward with the business English.

We finished the day with a role-play activity- 'Making an appointment', I split the groups into pairs, and each pair created a telephone dialogue. They each would then make a call, student a would be the potential customer and student b the receptionist. Each pair also had a different theme including:

-Hairdresser
-Doctor
-Bank
-Dentist
-Hotel

They did very well with this and it really highlighted some useful vocabulary for them.

Regards
Scott

We had a very interesting class this week, one of my friday evening students (http://www.english-test.net/forum/ftopic43870.html#leipzig_physiotherapist_group) invited us to his place of work. He wanted to give his presentation about his business that we had prepared the previous week. The group were then invited to ask questions which was a perfect way to refresh their 'Question forms'. We then looked through the brochures from the business and began to translate it and understand it which was quite challenging as it's quite a unique type of business. The group expressed how much they enjoyed the day as it was very interactive, and they enjoyed meeting my other student as they could relate to him and he reassured them because he was also at the same level as them 3 months ago. The group were really impressed by his ability to give a clear presentation in English, and they expressed their interest in creating one of their own.
