Midnight. "Thank God for that," said Philip. He'd worked for a straight twelve hours and he couldn't wait to get to bed.
Mr. Middleton, his boss, was busy cashing up the days takings as Philip shrugged his tired body into his old anorak. "Goodnight Boss," shouted Philip as he left the store. "Goodnight Phil, see you tomorrow, same time, same place," laughed Mr. Middleton. "He's a good lad that one," he said to his wife. "He certainly is, not like the usual rabble that we have around this area," replied his wife.
Philip strode out home-wards, just longing to crawl into his comfortable single bed. He walked to the end of the long main street and then cut through the park. It was dark in the park, but he wasn't afraid. He used this route every night after work. Ten more minutes and he would be safely home.
He whistled softly as he walked through the park, hands thrust deep into his pockets, and he had no chance as the first blow from the baseball bat struck him across the back. He sank to his knees and received further blows to his ribs and lastly to the nape of his neck. His assailant the stooped low and drew a long kitchen knife across his exposed throat. And so he died. A young man without an enemy in the world. A boy who worked diligently for his boss and gave most of his money to his Mother.
His parents were in their sixties and his Father had been unable to work for quite a long time. Philip's wages helped to get them through yet another difficult month.
When he hadn't arrived home by two a.m. his worried parents phoned the police, who promised to search the local area, but it wasn't until the next morning that a young couple found Philip's body lying there in a secluded part of the park.
The police came and the forensic team searched for clues, but nothing was found that was of any help. Just another pointless, unsolved killing. The police informed his distressed parents and an inquest later reached the decision of Murder by a person or persons unknown.
After the tearful funeral normality finally returned to the household of Philip. His parents were, by all outward appearances, grief-stricken. His Mother wept for days. His Father hid his sorrow well.
Many weeks later they received an insurance cheque on Philip's life policy. It was for quite a considerable sum. They were able to buy all manner of things that they had wished for for years.
Later in the year it was a joint decision that they would go on a short cruise. That first night aboard they drank and danced in a fashion that they hadn't for years, and on their return to their cabin Philip's Mother fell fast asleep in seconds. Later when the ship was quiet his Father stole from his cabin and made his pyjama-clad way to the stern of the ship.
Into the foaming wake of the ship he flung a packet which contained the sawn baseball bat and knife that had killed his son. He walked slowly back to their luxuriously appointed cabin and lay down next to his wife.
