My school teacher says 'Maintain one tense only while writing your answers' #1 (permalink) Fri Sep 04, 2009 6:13 am   My school teacher says 'Maintain one tense only while writing your answers'

good morning everybody.

one thing is more that I would like to share it with you sir, my school teacher says," Maintain one tense only while writing your answers". As I always find her in a great anger so I never dare to raise this question to her. Please tell me if it is possible to maintain one tense only in the piece of writings for when we write we have to illustrate past events sometimes. Kindly tell me how it can be possible.
I would really appreciate your input.

Hi Sonia,

I have no wish to annoy your teacher but I feel that maintaining one tense only in a descriptive/narrative text would be difficult. Probably your teacher means that you should be consistent in your use of tenses and not jump from one to the other without reference to the action you are describing. Each tense usually has defined uses and you should be able to keep within those boundaries. Perhaps you could give me an example where you have written something that has displeased your teacher.

"you should be consistent in your use of tenses and not jump from one to the other without reference to the action you are describing."

please tell me sir what you want to suggest me by this sentence. Would you mind throwing some instances to support this line? sorry to bother you sir but this is actually very important for me to know.

Hi Sonia,

What I am suggesting is that you should make sure that the tense you use is consistent with the action you are describing. I am assuming that your teacher wants you to write your answers in the same tense as the questions. Is that the case? What I mean is that if the question asks: What did Charlie do after work? and that is clearly in the past simple, you would have to answer: He went (past simple) home. Is that what you are referring to?
