try out...... test as in we tried out a new recipe

try on....... (1) see if clothes / shoes fit and look good in a shop.
(2) attempt to lie to or deceive someone new to a situation. The driver told me his duties finishes at 6pm, He was trying it on, he really finishes at 9pm.
