we will go shopping after the breakfast.

i know it should be "we will go shopping after breakfast." however, i don't really know why. is it just because the word "the" is unnecessary?

Hi,

You only need 'the' before a noun when the noun is defined/described as in: We ate the breakfast which was available at the hotel.
