Barney sat writing laboriously in his diary.
December the thirty-first, another year over.

He had lost count of the number of diaries he had filled over the years. Although only a poor penmen he had always followed his nightly routine of filling his diary at the end of each day.

If others could see him writing in a diary they would have laughed at him, although they would have been given a good hiding for doing so.

He was a violent man, full of bitterness at the world that surrounded him, and as he quaffed his pints in his local hostelry he would listen to the conversations buzzing around the filled bar.
He had only to hear one comment with which he disagreed to explode into violence toward the unfortunate speaker.

They all knew him, and all were aware of his violent temper, therefore he had few associates.
They preferred to leave Barney drinking alone at the bar.

The night was drawing to a close and he was thinking about what he would write in his diary tonight.
Nothing much had happened today and it seemed unlikely that anything would happen now, so late in the day.

Just before closing time the bar-door opened and a young man entered.
He walked to the bar and stood next to Barney.
It was obvious that he was an educated young man, and all of the onlookers were surprised when he entered into a low conversation with Barney.

Barney listened intently to the words of the young man, and he took a note which was offered to him.
He read it, and after a slight pause he asked the young man a question.
The young man replied, and they both laughed heartily.

"Time gentlemen please," called the landlord, and people began finishing their drinks.
Barney and the young man walked out of the pub and once outside they shook hands and embraced each other with a warm hug.

The puzzled faces of the drinkers peered out of the window.
What the hell was going on out there?

Barney walked slowly home and went straight to his bedroom. He opened the drawer of his bedside cabinet and took out his diary.

In it he wrote ..................................
