TOEFL essay: Do you agree or disagree? -- Progress is always a good thing. #1 (permalink) Sun Sep 13, 2009 12:49 pm   TOEFL essay: Do you agree or disagree? -- Progress is always a good thing.

Do you agree or disagree? "Progress is always a good thing."

Without any progress the society will still keep the status quo. But leads this to the conclusion that progress is always a good thing? In my opinion, progress is always better than keeping the old because of making live more comfortable, healthy and the quality of live.

The first advantage is that progress makes the live more comfortable. Today, it is quite common that we have cars, electricity and Internet. These inventions make the live more comfortable than hundred years ago. For example, if you want to meet a friend but you do not know where she/he live you can plug in your computer in the power socket in order to use the Internet to find the address of your friend. Additionally, you can go by car to your friend. This short example shows that inventions make the live more comfortable - there are not such inventions without any progress.

Second, progress increases the healthy of people. Many diseases are able to treat, which cannot target many years ago. Moreover, the average age of people improve rapidly. These circumstances have their origins in the progress. Drugs were developed which are able to target diseases and people eat more healthy food which leads to a higher age. Therefore, I think that progress is always a good thing.

Finally, the quality of live needs to be taken into consideration. In the modern society, people have more free time than in the past. People might go in cinemas, bars or theaters. There are many free time activities you can do on weekend. For instance, in the Middle Age people had to work the whole time so that they had enough food to survive. In the present, people must not work the whole time, they can enjoy their live more than in the past.

In conclusion, I believe that progress is always a good thing. Progress makes the live more comfortable, healthy and better. I would not like to live in the past, where I would miss so many things, which are normal today.

Please rate my essay. Thank you very much!

Cheers,
Jimmy

In my opinion, this essay effectively addresses the topic and task
is well organized and well developed,
displays unity, progression, and coherence
though it has occasional noticeable errors in structure, word form, or use of idiomatic language. For example,
1. "...because of making live more comfortable, healthy and the quality of live." does not make much sense to me.
2. there is no article before society
3....

Hi Y2king,

thank you very much for your proof-reading. I know that I have made some mistakes and failures. For example, I often wrote "live" instead of "life" and I love articles so much, especially the small word "the" :-). For any reason, I was not able to edit my essay after publication.

Have a nice day!!!

Cheers,
Jimmy
