Hi

I would like to know if you can help me understand this term which appears in an article that deals with how to negotiate a severance package when you are laid off.

Here's the article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/09/04/AR2009090404232_2.html

It's the phrase that says 'Look for gotchas'.

I know the term 'Gotcha' means 'I have got you' but I don't know what it means in this context.

Any help is appreciated.

It means to look out for small details and restrictive requirements in the deal that the company is offering.

Otherwise, if you sign it, then they've 'got you', i.e. they have you trapped if you try to do something the contract says you can't.
