How do we say/speak for exponent expression? #1 (permalink) Fri Sep 18, 2009 10:09 am   How do we say/speak for exponent expression?

Hi all,

How do you say this Math expression verbally?

3^4 (which is shorten of 3 x 3 x 3 x 4).

In general, a^b: what are the name of "a" and "b"?

Thank you very much!

3^4

Three to the power of four.

A^B

"A" to the power of "B". "A" is the "base", and "B" is the "exponent".

You could also say: three to the fourth power, which is perhaps slightly more common.
