Hi Alan,
The essay is very good!I also think that there's no excuse for English people to learn other languages.

Hello Mr.Alan,

What a fascinating essay you have written. I feel like you are reading my mind since I was planning to learn a new language lately which is French. Although I did not reach the level I seek at English but I am thinking to learn French also. Such a plane may raise my opportunities to have a job as a translator. However, I have to take an action and move forward to get my goal. Thanks for your great essay and whish me luck in turning my dreams into a reality.

Regards,

Meera

Hello Mr. Alan Townend,

Thank you so much for the newsletter, Backing the Baccalaureat (English essay 8), that was sent to me. In fact, learning English is my second language, and it is an advantage for me for the sake of communication, career and future.

However, I have two questions with regard to the understanding of the text. The first question concerns the last line of the first paragraph. What does the phrase “either over or under” mean?

The second one refers to line 4 of the last paragraph. What does part of the sentence “as many windows as possible should be open to young minds” mean?

I look forward to hearing from you, and thank you so much for your kind attention.

Best wishes,
Bhikkhu1991a.

Hi,

Thank you for your comments about the newsletter. Let me answer your questions. The meaning of either over or under - as Britain is an island, you have to cross the channel between the UK and France if you want to go south. You can either go by ferry 'over the sea' or through the tunnel 'under the sea'.

Your second question about the meaning of as many windows as possible should be open to young minds - my point here is that as many ways of looking at the world as possible (through windows or opportunities) should be available to young people. 'Window' I have used here to mean the chance to learn new ideas.

Alan

Hello, Alan!

Yes. I am agree with you. The world is become in a village. For this reason, we have to learn several languages in order to communicate with others and to find another opportunnity in the life. But, through the history English and Americans sold the idea that English is the most important language and it is the future one. The rest of the people (including me) are desperate trying to learn this language looking for new opportunities or for sharing ideas with native English people or the most important to make bussiness (the world is managed by the economy).

Hi Alan,

I agree that educational systems of different countries should be connected into one big international system and there should be unified international diplomas. But I am against such an approach when values of one educational system are imposed to another one. In my opinion the best features of different systems should be thoroughly and carefully analyzed and only then an integrated international system should be created.

I know that sounds almost unrealistic but I believe that the times of international tolerance will come and people from all over the world will solve their problems together. This site is one of the examples and evidences that communication of people without any national and religious prejudges is possible.

Best regards,

Yuri

The advantage with learning English is that that we are surroonded with it everywhere (the most popular websites, tv, movies, advertistments), so it's easy to make progress everyday without make a special efforts. Ande whereever you go you would usually meet people who can comunicate in English. The thing is a bit more difficult with other languages. When you want to start to learn some other language you must try harder to find sources in that language, and it is more difficult to meet people who speak that language unless you travel to the counrty where people speak that language.
But I agree with you, there is no excuse for not to learn other language.

Dear Alan,

Your essay is very good. it teach us that even though we learn English Language but it is important to learn other language. English is international language but if someone knows more than one language, it will be easy to compare and contrast languages so that can fit in any place in this world.

From your essay I learn that I have to pull up my socks so that I can understand English Language.

Thank you for your efforts.
