I went back to get my bag but it...

- had gone
- was gone

Which do you prefer and why?

Thanks

"Was gone": I'd use "had gone" for something that can move by itself, "was gone" for something that can only be moved by something else.

But note that you can say, for example: "I went back to get my bag, but it had been stolen."
