How to pronounce the American 'j'? #1 (permalink) Thu Sep 24, 2009 0:03 am   How to pronounce the American 'j'?

Hi All,

I cannot produce the American J. My friends told me that I pronounce j similarly to z.

Is the j sound similar to the ch sound?

Please help me!

Thanks a lot!

Hi there...

This is Tom Kane writing. I wanted to respond your question about the letter "J." I can understand why you might pronunce the letter "J" similar to the "ch" sound.

For example, the man's name 'Jack' could sound like 'Ch-ack'. Let me try to give you another example. It will be hard for me to write this...so I' just going to pronunce it for you.

Here goes....

I hope that helps.

Tom

Thanks Tom Kane !

I listen to the dictionary, but I cannot recognize the differences between j and ch. Some dictionaries pronounce j similar to ch.
