One of the most difficult things that a child learning to ride a bicycle finds is lifting the foot on the ground and pushing it down on the petal.

(a) most difficult
(b) learning
(c) the foot
(d) petal

One of the most difficult things that a child learning to ride a bicycle finds is lifting the foot on the ground and pushing it down on the pedal.

Correct entry: pedal
The error was: (d) petal

Even corrected, this is a horrible sentence, surely the purpose of this test is not to confuse a foreign learner of our language more than necessary.
At least you aren't the publishers of the ridiculous book English Grammar for You and I.

Hi,

As the author of the 300 + tests involving around 10 questions for each and generally 4 choices for each question - I leave you to do the maths - I'm sorry that this one sentence hasn't met with your favour. Perhaps it might be an idea to glance at some of the others which, from the sort of reaction we've received over the last 2 years, are said to enlighten rather than confuse our users.
