hello. I'm also learning English. I was talking to another student of English when he corrected me with the phrase 'gender discrimination" . He said I should have said 'sexual discrimination'. but i prefer to say it that way. Am I wrong? thanks Alan.

Not unless you're overly concerned about being politically correct.

'Gender discrimination' is just the more PC version of 'sexual discrimination'.

I wouldn't be overly concerned about it, as political correctness frequently gets taken to the point of ludicrousy, anyway. However, that's just my opinion.

And "sexual discrimination" is itself already a more PC version of "discrimination of women". The endless shifting of taboos. I despise it. Don't mind me.

It's perfectly fine to say "gender discrimination", and it's better than "sexual discrimination", because the word "sexual" can carry the meaning of sexual intercourse. "Sexual discrimination" can actually sound like discriminating against people as potential sex partners, which is not what you want to say. So your only choices to avoid that nuance are "gender discrimination" and "sex discrimination".

The person who corrected you was probably following the preferred trend of some "politically correct" group, and a year from now that group will probably want people to use some other term. For groups like that, it's not about achieving accuracy, but about being able to chide people and feel superior to them.

Correct me if I'm wrong. I'm under the impression that "Gender Discrimination" indicates discrimination against people base on their gender - male and female. On the one hand, "Sexual Discrimination" is discrimination of people from sexual orientation perspective such as homosexual, hetrosexual, pansexual etc.. :confuse:

The idea you're thinking of is usually expressed as "discrimination based on sexual orientation".
