Agree or disagree? The best way to travel is in a group led by a tour guide. #1 (permalink) Sat Sep 26, 2009 19:50 pm   Agree or disagree? The best way to travel is in a group led by a tour guide.

Hi all,

I am new here, and I am really glad, that I found this forum. It seems to be a great resource of information about the TOEFL.

I am planning to take the TOEFL in the next couple of months, since it can be used as a substitute for my high school leaving exam of english and I will also need it to get accepted into college.

So here is my first essay I am posting here. Thank you for critique, comments and so on.

Quote:
Without a doubt, group travel led by a professional tour guide is more popular than solo travel. In any touristy city, you can encounter those groups, gathered around their guide, listening to his speech about the monument they are just looking at. But being most popular does not have to mean that it is the best way to travel, does it? Although the guided tours have some advantages as well, I have to say, that I prefer travelling on my own.

In my opinion, the most important advantage of solo travel is the freedom it gives to you. When you are traveling with a group, and you do not like the place you are just visiting, you will still have to wait for the rest of the group to gather until you move on. On the other hand, if you are traveling alone, you can immidiately leave that uninteresting place and make your way to the next, more interesting one.

Another reason, why I prefer to travel alone is the fact, that it is often cheaper to travel without a guide and other travel companions. For example, when you are travelling in a group and one of the travellers get hungry and stops to grab something to eat, you usually cannot resist to get yourself something too. Although the drink or meal you get can cost just a couple of bucks, a penny saved is a penny earned.

Finally, I think, the travel is mostly about adventure, and in my opinion, it is more adventurous to have to tackle with the communication in a language you do not speak or with other situations, such as when you get lost. Such situations will certainly not occur, when you are with the guide.

In conclusion, I definitely prefer travelling on my own, without a guide to show me around. Eventhough the independent travel requires more preparations, I think it adds to the experience. It gives you the chance to visit just places you really want to visit and you also get to visit some not so touristy places, which definitely has to be the biggest advantage of solo travelling.

Best regards, Keishi
