Why do you hold your breath in bed in the night, when you hear an unaccustomed noise, especially when that noise is in your house and you are all alone?
Do you put your head under the blankets and hope it goes away, or do you continue to listen, breathing being secondary to your fear?
The breaths that you do eventually draw are shallow and very light, and the exhaling is silent.
Are you afraid, or are you summoning your courage to call out, "Who's there?"
Is it better to remain still and silent, or should you creep to the bedroom door and listen?
Dare you slightly open the door, and pray that it will open silently?
Should you open the bedroom window and scream for help?
Maybe you will make yourself out to be a witless fool to your would-be rescuers.
Should you phone the police? But this is England, and before they arrive you would be long dead.
Listen, there it is again! Make up your mind quickly. What are you going to do?
Goodnight.
