Dear Mr Torsten
Thank you for your great interest and care. I am really very interested in getting through such academic topics related to Linguistics
especially Applied Linguistics; and semiotics is one of the new branches added to Phonology, Morphology, Syntax and Semantics.
I also have already studied on the theories related to the linguist Noam Chomsky and Saussure etc. these topics are very important
to me since it gives me a broader background about the nature of language in general and English in particular.

On motorway, we have speed limit, level crossing, keep space, No tooting, road narrows on left/right, ...... I think these signs are very helpful so that when we drive we can care for other motorists and ourselves. I enjoy reading Alan's essay, Read the signs very much. It sounds more thoughtful.

I was enjoyed greatly at the moment I had received Alan's essay . Semiotics - symbolism are very capacious and interesting themes. It would be great to exchange by some useful notes on this topic. What do you think about J.Lacan?

Hi Galindani,

I would certainly welcome any comments from you on this topic. I have to confess I do not know J Lacan. Perhaps you could educate me.

Hello,
Interest profession has Umberto Eco.Apart from the subject here in my country there is one very famous author who was professor too, but not in "semiotics".The signs on the road are crucial for some accidents to be avoided. For example in your nightmare Alan. Those with the stags I think are funny because only in the movies wild animals are jumping out in the street.Perhaps everybody can encounter animal on the road.

Hi Alan,

Wishing you a prosperous new year and good to hear that, you are learning sth. new. I invite you to my country 'India' and here you will come to know more about the "semiotics". I may help you as well as I learned a lot in my school days about signs. By the way, a good article and cheers to your wife as well.

Sachin.

Hello,

I remember that I took a course in the university about linguistic but it was basic so I did not learn something about sings. Anyway, this is a good and useful article to read and to be aware of those sings especially in the road to avoid accidents. I did not learn driving yet, but I hope I can get the license after taking some lessons and memorizing street sings.

Thanks,

Meera

Hi Alan,

I've read your esay with great interest as usual. I think signs tell us about many interesting things and they are very useful in our lives. Sometimes a sign is a single way to provide us with immediate information. Especially on the roads, especially in the situations of emergency. The more simple is a sign and the more information it bears, the more useful it is.

Regards,

Yuri

Hello Alan,
Luckily I did not have the same experience. I want you to suggest not to pay attention to all those details in such degree. Because as I understood it influenced you a lot, and you even were a little bit frustrated, and maybe felt chagrin at those signs. There should be similarities in road sides; your country is a part of EU, as France.
By the way, may I ask you a question?

What does the phrase "one piece" mean?

The initial sentence is the following:
"And you have to take those bends really seriously if you want to end your holiday in one piece."

Best regards, truly yours

Hi,

'In one piece' is a humorous expression and suggests that you haven't had any accidents and that literally your body is whole or complete.

hi!
sorry for such a passive act all this while..i am having some problems regarding the acces to internet. However, i enjoyed reading every single essay that i received. I have read the latest essay about signs. I think it is very crucial for us to understand the meaning for each sign. It will be very useful for us. But, do signs used in all countries differ from each other or there is a standard system for signs? By the way, i hope Alan's nightmare won't happen to me..and anyone else :p.

I think, the signs are everywhere,
but often we are too nervous, or impatient to sense them.
