A little child. #1 (permalink) Thu Oct 01, 2009 18:18 pm   A little child.

Being retired as I am, affords me lots of time to do just about anything I wish to do, but by far, my favourite pastime is watching the parents of little children, walking them in my local park.

Have you noticed how little children find it almost impossible to walk in a straight line?
They weave their way from side to side, and probably in doing so they walk greater distances than their parents.

Have you considered that the majority of the things that a small child sees, they are seeing for the very first time?
They look in wonder at a small bird flying by, and I hope that I too shared that very same wonder when I was small.

My uncle would take me into the countryside and we would find birds-nests.

I gaze at the tiny intricately woven nests and wonder if a man could build such a perfect construction without tools.

The humble Magpie, who builds a roof above his nest.
Where did it get that idea from, one wonders.

The amazing skylark who climbs so high before bursting into song, his tiny nest concealed in the grass far below him, and his mate sitting on the clutch of eggs.

The Curlew, his nest a scrape in the ground, and the eggs on open view to anyone with an eye good enough to spot them.

And the Tern who hollows the sand with his body to make a nest, and then surrounds the eggs with stones that match the colour of the eggs....amazing!

The tiny hatchlings, who know instinctively to remain silent when the parent is absent .... how do they know to do this?

That brings us back to the small child who is incapable of remaining silent at any time, other than when asleep.
He never hides his presence from others, and is more than ready to meet any danger face to face.

He loves anything that makes a noise.
A dog, cat or bird making their recognizable noises are music to his ears.
He will lock-on to them with his heat-seeking-missile vision until such time as he has imprinted their actions and sounds into his tiny computer brain.

Hot,cold, wet, dry, all of these sensations are registered and recognised the next time he comes into contact with them.

Little children are our living link to the future.
A future that many of us will never see.

We have to adore and cherish them, for we too were small in the past, and it's all thanks to having been adored and cherished by our parents that we can sit and gaze at the greatest wonder of all.....................................a small child.
