— Barbara, did the wire transfer from Seoul come through yet?
— Let's see. Yes, it came through yesterday. After paying the bank's wire fee, it totaled $1,750.
— What? The original wire was for $2,000. That bank fee is too high!
— I agree, it is. I'll shop around today and see if I can find a bank that charges a lower one.

I'm wondering what's the meaning of "The original wire was for $2,000" in this paragraph.

In this conversation, I guess the man is the boss of Barbara. And I guess the original wire was for $2,000. That means the wire transfer fee is $250(2,000-1,750=250). Am I right?

Thanks in advance.

Dear Maggie,

I suppose 'the original wire' means here that someone wanted to transfer 2,000 dollars from one bank to another. Then this 'original sum' was lessen to 1,750 because the bank's fee for this service was 250 dollars.

Yuri is right.
A "wire" is a metal cable used to transfer electric current; electric current can be used to transfer information, such as through telephone or telegraph cables; that is why the transfer of information through such a cable is often called a wire transfer. A transfer of money that passes through wires may thus be called a wire transfer; the word "transfer" is sometimes left out, which is a bit more colloquial.
