The folks at my university are very rigid when it comes down to assignments; according to them, Google, for the most part, is not a very credible/reliable source. Just an example. :]

| I guess that depends on the style you are supposed to write in, and on the way you use Google. If you are in doubt whether an expression sounds natural to a native speaker, and you find many hits on Google, you have significant evidence; but it may or may not be too colloquial for a thesis. However, you could try searching within certain sites, such as the NY or London times; this is done by adding site:nytimes.com to your search. What's good enough for major newspapers will be good enough for many other genres. |
